Tenormin is a prescribed medication utilized for reducing blood pressure (hypertension), alleviating angina symptoms, and enhancing survival rates following a heart attack. It may also be used "off-label" for additional conditions like migraines or anxiety.
Tenormin belongs to a category of drugs known as beta-adrenergic blocking agents, commonly referred to as beta blockers. It works by blocking a particular type of beta receptor known as beta-1 receptors. By inhibiting beta-1 receptors, this medication counteracts the effects of stress hormones, such as adrenaline (epinephrine). It lowers heart rate as well as both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, reducing the heart’s workload, which means it requires less blood and oxygen to function effectively.
Tenormin functions as a beta-adrenergic blocking agent. It interferes with the actions of the sympathetic nervous system, a component of the involuntary nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system accelerates heartbeats. By blocking these nerve actions, Tenormin decreases heart rate and is beneficial for treating abnormally fast heart rhythms. Additionally, Tenormin diminishes the strength of heart muscle contractions and lowers blood pressure. This reduction in heart rate and contraction force decreases the oxygen demand of the heart muscle. Since angina occurs when the heart's oxygen demand surpasses its supply, Tenormin proves effective in managing angina.
Continue using this medication even if you feel well. Avoid missing any doses. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember if it is over 8 hours before the next dose is scheduled. If it is under 8 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing routine. Do not take two doses at the same time.
Tablets should be kept at room temperature in a tightly sealed container.
